Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championship

The Lawn Tennis Championship meeting is joint effort of The All England Tennis and Croquet Club and The Lawn Tennis Asssociation. The Lawn Tennis championships which developed in 1877 has witnessed a transformation from a garden party atmosphere to a highly professional game attended by more than a lakh of people. The Lawn Tennis Championship is run by a committee of 12 AELTC members and 7 Lawn Tennis Association nominees. During the end of June and starting of July, for a fortnight the club becomes a hive of activity. Around 6,000 people visit the club.

Open to the public on April 12th, 2006, the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum and Tour features new cinema which shows a film on the science of tennis; through a new projection technique called “Pepper’s Ghost”. The museum provides information on how the game played in the garden party in the medieval period has evolved to a professional game. Through the technique called “Pepper’s Ghost”, John McEnroe as a 3-D ghost walking through the 1980’s Gentleman Dressing Room tells his personal experiences before going to play in the court in Wimbledon. He opens lockers and remembers the days when he met Jimmy Connors. The museum also displays a vast collection of Wimbledon attire from the outfits worn in 1880s to Rafael Nadal’s Nike trousers worn in 2005. “Get s Grip” is the section where information on the owner, technology and story of the tennis racket is provided. One can also view the Championship Singles trophies of both Gentlemen’s and Ladies’ which dates back from 1887 and 1886, respectively. The trophies have the names of the champions engraved on them. There is also Wimbledon shop in conjunction to the museum which displays item from new collections of head, apparels. The Museum is accessible to people with the tournament tickets during The Championships from June 22 to July 5, 2009.
