Regent Street Festival

Regent Street will be celebrating its annual festival which will be themed “Indian Summer” and will showcase India’s diversity and creativity. It will be the finale of the London Mayor’s India Now Festival. For one day, the Regent Street will be changed for free outdoor events displaying the flair, culture and magic of India, known for its exotic festivals.

The Regent Street would be closed to traffic on September 2, 2007 and Sumant Jayakrishnan, famous for his stage design of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at Roundhouse, will decorate the street. To make the atmosphere more vibrant, painted booths and stunning designs by Xylem Papercraft from Delhi will decorate the street.

The Goan beach area decorated with palm trees, visitors can find food stalls, restaurants, traditional Indian handicrafts which include block-printing, beadwork and embroidery. Children can enjoy puppet performances and workshops from the Aakaar Puppet Company.

The festival will also host some musical performances from visiting Indian musicians and UK musicians. Regent Street and Heddon Street will stage the performances of wide range of Indian popular musical and dance performances. UK-based Dhol Academy along with the performers Walk the Plank will present a spectacular performance “In the Dholdrums” which will feature giant drums, costumes, stilt-walkers and fireworks.

Other performances to be performed in the Regent Street Festival showing the regional variety of India are performances by Jaipur Kawa Brass Band from Rajasthan, specialized in sophisticated brass sounds and dance and circus acts, stilt performances from Orissa and performances from martial arts troupe from Manipur.

The Regent Street festival will also feature Fourteen regions from Spain would be participating in the event with the theme ‘A Walk Through Spain’ displaying the food and culture and music and dance of Spain. There will also be a series of Spanish music and dance in Heddon Street. Moreover, there would also be free Flamenco dance in the street.
