The Tower of London was used to prison people of royal status and religious dissidents. “Prisoners of the Tower” brings to life the story of executions and imprisonments through its victims. The exhibition leads from the Traitors gate through dungeons and takes to the execution sites. It breaks the myth of rat-infested dungeons. Most of the prisoners of royal status were provided with luxury when imprisoned in the Tower.

Designed by Holmes Wood, a consultancy appointed by Historical Royal Palaces, it will reflect the life experience of the past inmates of Tower of London. The Beauchamp tower and the Bloody tower will display the history of the Tower through themes. The upper level of the Beauchamp Towers will display the graffiti carved by the prisoners in the stone walls. The Bloody Tower will display three main themes; Sir Walter Raleigh’s imprisonment, the murder of the Princes and murder of Sir Thomas Overbury.

Through the help of audio and visual displays one can explore the fascinating history of the Tower. A tour led by a costumed guide or by audio guide will inform about the tales of some people who were locked inside the Tower. Some of the famous prisoners locked up in the Tower were Anne Boleyn, King Henry VI, Edward V and his brother Richard Duke of York and many more. The new displays include activities like playing the role of the news reader.

The exhibition also displays the personal possessions of prisoners, furniture, rare documents and works of art. Throughout July, in the weekends, the Tower will present the display “Thrown in Prison” which will give a chance to experience as a prisoner in the Tower. The tour is informative and presents information on the blood-soaked history of the Tower which helps in building the interest of children in the past.

The admission fee for the adults to the Prisoners of Tower is £16.00 per ticket and for children is £9.50 per ticket.
