London Mela

The London Mela, a major free festival, commissioned by the Mayor of London and produced by Ealing Council is celebrating Asian art, culture and creativity. Started in 2003, the first London Mela attracted 60,000 people. London Mela, inspired by South Asia and Diaspora, features the Asian culture and creativity. It is described as the Asian Glastonbury, the mela provides a platform to new British artists and traditional and classical art forms. The London mela attracts Asian as well as non-Asian communities to the best in classical music, Asian exhibitions, circus, street-theatre, comedy and cabaret, and many more.

The Mela features various live stages and activity zones. The main stage features the upcoming British Asian talent and international artists. Other stages include classical stage, Indo-electronica stage, BBC Asian Network stage. Other zones include Magic mela for children, funfair, food-stalls. This year the highlights of the Mela are performances by Dhol Academy and combined performance by Pandit Dinesh, godfather of British Asian urban music and Afro-Latin jazz pianist Kishon Khan.

Main Stage – In association with BBC Asian Network, Asian Network DJ’s Adil Ray, Noreen, and DJ Kayper will host the main stage. The Main stage will have performances from Rishi Rich, Sukshinder Shinda, Sona Family, Heera, Prithpal, Surinder Rattan and Ananda Gupta and Foundation for Indian Performing Arts.

BBC Asian Network Stage – In London Mela, new British-Asian music can be enjoyed, where DJ’s Punjabi Hit Squad, DJ Kayper and Sonny Ji would be mixing down the music. Other artists featuring in the BBc Asian Network Stage are Adil Ray, Noreen, Ameet Chana, and Nerm & D- Code.

Indo-electronica Stage – Indo-electronica is presented by Continental Drifts, Sense 3d, Resonance FM, Indian Electronica Records and is supported by PRSF and The Arts Council.

Heritage Maidaan and Classical – Visitors will have the opportunity to know about the art and cultural heritage showing the historical background of the sub-continents.

Magic Mela – In association with Emergency Exit Arts, an interactive environment for youngsters has been created with sea and jungle creatures of the natural world. Children can enjoy the magic of stories, dance and creative plays.

London Flavas – In association with BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Londan Flavas will be featuring the host from Radio 1 Bobby and Nihal, Outlandish, Sway, Mennis and Nazza T, and Offlicence who would be performing British Asian urban music.
