Inside the Spitfire

Inside the Spitfire is the current exhibition in the Ingenious series. Inside the Spitfire commemorates the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. On one side of the gallery is the deconstructed spitfire and on the opposite side personal stories pilots, designers, production workers and ground crew of the aircraft is presented.

The exhibition presents an incredible view of the famous British fighter plane used in the Second World War. The exhibition presents information on the engineering and designing skills of R J Mitchell. It presents information on the details of his career and his initial designs of spitfire. The exhibition also displays the statue of Mitchell created by Stephen Kettle. It also includes the personal stories of thousand of people who built and flew the aircraft. Letter, papers, medals, rare pictures from the Castle Bromwich Spitfire Factory is also on display.

The exhibition also has a disassembled Spitfire Mk22 from RAF which describes the features of the components of the plane. A section of the exhibition is donated to the Castle Bromwich aircraft factory in Birmingham which produced 12,000 spitfires. The exhibition also shows a propaganda film “Jane Brown Changes her Job” from 1942 which pays tribute to women who worked in the aircraft factories during World War II. The engineering drawings showcase the developments in spitfire.

The exhibition also raised funds for the planes through public donations. The Spitfire badges that were displayed were sold to raise money for the Spitfire Fund. On achieving the target figure, the donor received photographs of the plane and a presentation plaque.

The exhibition loaned by RAF Museum, is open in the second floor of the Science Museum. The Science Museum is a large building with many floors. The museum map which will be provided on entry of the gate will help in locating staircases, lifts, eating outlets and others. Museum staff will also help in locating the places.
